Matt’s Personality in Marketing Contest – Submit Your Entries Here

Following a comment from one of my subscribers (and friends), I’ve set up a contest to find the best method of adding personality to internet marketing.

That might sound strange, but I explain it all in this video:

Here’s the link that Luke sent me. It’s pretty interesting and shows the extent to which blogging can create a great income online (if you go about it in the right way:

http://technorati.com/blogging/article/day-4-blogging-revenues-brands-and/

For the contest, simply add your comments below, telling me the best way of adding personality to internet marketing (both e-mails and blogs). I’ll create a prize for the best suggestion, and of course, I’ll share it right here so that everyone can use it to increase the impact of their marketing.

The contest will close on the 6th August at 12pm.

  • Nice Vid Matt.

I’ve learnt that the best way to add personality to your material is to be “more” of you.

If you’re boring, play to that in your marketing, if you’re energetic be very upbeat.

By playing to your strengths, you’ll get a much better response and come across more authentically as well which is VERY important.

You’re a legend Matt so just be you, cream cakes and all ;-)

    Neil

    • Matt:

Haha, thanks Neil. I might have to explain the cream cakes reference to the rest of my readers at some point… Sounds a little odd otherwise!

So what you’re saying is that my readers need to see more of the sarcastic performer?! ;) Excellent…

How do you balance the selling side of what you do with the ‘personality’ side?

  • Hey Matt

Thanks for drawing my attention to this post, I think its a fantastic idea, just stumbled it too!

I’ve got to admit this is the first time I have properly scoured your blog and I have to say you’ve done a great job buddy! Now to the question…

I think the best way to get personality into your marketing is to truly be yourself, don’t try and put on a façade or try to imitate others. People buy from people that they know like and trust, the only way you can achieve that is by making yourself accessible, and being “transparent.”

This is why I am such a great fan of video marketing. When I first started it really wasnt easy (as I’m sure you could confirm) you stumble over what to say, and think you should be saying things in a certain way. But the more I did it the better I got at it, and when the sales roll in, you really see just how powerful video marketing is, and gain real confidence in what you are doing and saying. Almost every time when I speak with a new client or prospect, they will tell me, they feel like they know me already, that for me in itself is proof that I am successfully letting my personality come through in my marketing, not only do they feel they know me.. the fact that they have gone on to call me shows that they want to know me even better. Other than video marketing, I think if you’re partcipating in the social networking sites, then its important that you recognise that it is a “social” site.. dont just be all business business business. Let your personality shine through, and let people into “your world” by seeing the real you, connect with people, upload photos, tell people what you like, what you dont like, what youre doing at the weekend etc etc.. doing this will strike up interaction from others who will see your transparency which will subsconsciously build their trust in you. By getting yourself “out there” people will discover that they relate to your for one reason or another.. where you live, what your hobbies are, what your dreams are etc etc, people relating to you alone, can be enough for someone to buy from you.

Anyway.. I think thats enough from me… I could talk all day on the subject! Keep up the fantastic work magic matt!! :-)

    • Matt:

Wow, now I know who to go to when I need feedback! Awesome stuff, thanks Cher. Glad you like the blog too.

I agree with the ‘be yourself’ mantra. It’s interesting as it’s actually harder than one might think to actually do it. Like you said, when you start out you’re not sure how you’re coming across and you stumble over words, even if you’re scripted.

It’s great to hear your feedback on video marketing and that it’s made you sales too.

You make a really good point about the whole ‘social’ side of social media too. I’ve only really just started to open up my own personal account on the book of Face to my IM contacts and it’s been very refreshing how easy it is to get into conversations (as long as you’re adding value to that chat in some way).

Have you been reading Cialdini’s book Influence? The point you make about transparency and the subconscious trust it builds is something he touches upon. If you haven’t been reading Cialdini, when’s your book coming out?! :)

Thanks for taking the time to write such a great comment. I think this puts you in the lead so far…

  • Hi Matt,

I don’t know how to be any more constructive than to say just be yourself. I once heard a saying from Dean Hunt which resonates perfectly for this. He said,

“You might as well be yourself as everyone else is already taken.”

I always find your posts interesting, insightful and you certainly provide a lot of value. That’s why your 7 Habits of Highly Effective Internet Marketers product is going to be a huge hit!

I am always looking for different opportunities to do filming not only in my office, but in the park or just random places. This is why iPhone 4 is an internet marketer’s dream. Let people into your world by doing some filming in other locations. I know it’s not always possible with distractions and noise.

Keep up the good work. :-)

    Wayne

    • Matt:

Hey Wayne, good to see you back here. Great work on your blog by the way, it’s really starting to come alive!

Dean’s point is a very good one. I’ve started to realise more and more that the more I am myself, then the quicker I will find my ‘tribe’ of people that I can help. After all, people buy people like them, first.

Thanks for the kind feedback on my posts.

Yeah, I really like the marketers who just shoot a quick video ‘on the fly’ somewhere random. It feels like they’ve just thought of it and that they have to share it with you. It’s also cool as it feels more personal. The likes of Eben Pagan’s high concept videos are fantastic, but they don’t have that documentary feel that adds to the personality.

      Talk to you soon buddy.

      Matt

  • Hey Matt

This is very interesting. Not really from the IM world but having had experience over the last few months in mixing in the IM world, I would say that being yourself does help a lot! Even though I use a lot of various positioning strategies I still share my personality with people whether it’s my poems, my views or comments. I think you should always have a dialogue through your IM channels with people just like as if they were sitting right in front of you with a cup of coffee in hand! People are getting wiser to the different channels of marketing and can see ‘fakeness’ from a mile!

Build that connection first and then give people what they REALLY want!

    • Matt:

Hey Sohail! Great to have you here and thanks for commenting.

Your dialogue is pretty unique on Facebook, and hearing about how you create that is very interesting. I like the idea of having coffee with your entire Facebook following! I’ll keep an eye on your Facebook updates as I think they’re a good model for great interaction. Thanks for the feedback.

      Matt

  • Joy:

    Hi Matt,
I could spend at least 30 minutes on this so I’ll say one thing: What works for one is disastrous for another as it depends on your own style. If I compare the first video of yours, Fiverr, with your competition about personality video, the first was far more engaging because it sounded far more personal, more intimate and more authoritative. All of these were as a result of you firstly being more relaxed and secondly being more sure of what you were saying, which led to a lovely flow.
If you like, as a way of saying thank you for your Fiverr video I will happily spend 30 minutes talking through the two videos in small chunks to show you the comparitive emotional effect on the audience of the different aspects of your tone, tonality, eye movements, breathing, flow, language and prvimity to the microphone.
    Kindest regards,
    Joy

    • Matt:

Very good point Joy. I’d love to have a chat with you about the effects of the videos.

I’ll drop you an e-mail later on.

      Thanks for your feedback.

      Matt

  • Fran:

Matt, congrats on this idea in and of itself!
What I have seen and know about you that I dont see here is your ability to step into others heads as an actor and your ability to entertain as a magician. This is really juicy stuff and I want to see more exuberance, hear more of your opinions on day to day things (the more contraversial the better!) One thing I pictured in my head was you telling us a story of something that happened in your day that you got emotive about, then you re counting this story using your ability to role play and step into each of the relevant characters…then using your intellect and ability to match this experience to a principal of IM. Ive heard you do this with me on countless ocassions. I think increasing your video content would increase the relationship and loyalty of your subscribers.
    I hope this helps Matt
    I appreciate you,

    Fran :)

    • Matt:

      Hey Fran!

Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad you like the idea. I wanted to get more interactive with my readers.

Your point about storytelling makes a lot of sense and I may well go down the route of doing more of those sorts of videos.

I guess I wonder why people would want to hear my opinion on the small stuff, but at the same time, I’m normally quite opinionated (as you know) so I should let more of that come through.

      Thanks again for your inspiration.

      Matt

  • All I can say Matt, which is self explanatory, “JBY” Just Be Yourself! Don’t try to be something you are not. When you do this you will start to build a fan base, but as you can guess you cannot please everyone!

    Ashley

  • Hey Matt!

I just want to say first that I love what you are doing with your blog, it’s very clear and also the video you made above was great. It really shows your personality through well and this (competition) in itself is a great idea to share yourself!

So here are my ideas (sorry I tend to get carried away and write essays so apologies in advance ha ha!)

    All communication in general:

I agree with the above comments about being authentic and being yourself, but I also believe there are many different sides to us. (maybe I\’m just a schizophrenic! lol).Sometimes I feel in a silly, crazy mood, so I reflect that in my communication. This tends to get good responses because people like to have fun and see that you are a real person! Sometimes I feel a little deeper and more spiritual so I quote or share philosophies and centre my blog posts around personal development etc. This doesn\’t tend to get commented on as much, but I love to share it anyway because it\’s part of me. Other times I have my business head on and so I get really serious and focused and share advice, whether it be technical or based around marketing/social media. This is received really well because people want to learn how to brand themselves and build their businesses. Whichever \’hat\’ I have on, it\’s all still part of me and my personality. I do believe that there is a certain etiquette with social media specifically, so in a way this can be hard to be real if swearing all over the place and abusing people is the real you (hopefully not lol). Maybe ask your friends/family how they best see you and reflect that side of you in your videos or general communication? What about your magic? If you are talking about this particular blog (rather than your magic or acting one) then combine those interests with your IM. That would be cool!

    Blogging:

I always blog when I have been inspired by something because I want people to feel my energy and be inspired too. My personal blog is my hub and is where people can find out about me and get to know me better by my story and style of writing. I don\’t think there is any specific way to blog or to write. It should come from the heart and not be analysed. People often tell me that my writing is not polished, but that they know it is me writing, because I write from the heart and this shows in each post. I never edit or read back what I have written in case I get too critical of myself. If I was to read it back, I’d probably cringe and delete it which would mean nothing would get out!! Lol.(Same goes for videos).

    Business blogs:

I am a technical geek and I love technology and being creative. I have recently started a new business venture with two lovely ladies (who I met through social media) and I really wanted to create something that reflected us as a trio and our personalities. The two websites I made were created by me and although (again) they might not be polished, or of graphic designer level with the design, they reflect who we are and what we are doing and it feels really personal to us. We have had great feedback from what we are doing and so that is cool. We all take it in turns to write blog posts and share our views separately. We never say who has written what post, but it seems people can tell which is a good sign our personalities are coming through.

    Email communication:

With email communication I always send something useful, funny or something I know will genuinely help move people forward. I am also studying Life Coaching so helping people is a massive passion of mine. When doing a broadcast I keep it as real as possible and invite feedback. Feedback is important to build relationships and to get to know what your subscribers want, just like you have done here.

    Story-telling:

One of the reasons Yaro is so popular (apart from being an incredible, down to earth entrepreneur!)Is because people followed his story, his journey. As obviously, his blog is called the Entrepreneur Journey. I watched an Eban Pagen seminar recently and he said that people love to learn from those who are only 25% ahead of them in terms of success. Why? Because not only can they relate to them on a REAL level, they can also see that what they have achieved is possible. They are not out of reach. By following someone\’s journey from having nothing to creating massive success, it really is truly inspiring and shows that it IS possible. We have started the \’Diva journeys\’ in the same way so people can watch us grow the different levels and learn from our mistakes and our successes along the way.

    Video:

I haven\’t done much video yet (maybe 10 videos ever), but have lots of plans to do some in the next few weeks. I would agree with Cher that it is one of the best ways to reveal and share your personality so that people can connect to you. The more the better really.

Video tip: Stick a picture of someone, like a really funny face over the lens when you are talking and it will really help you to relax and smile throughout the video. It worked for me! I used Katy Brand pulling a stupid face as it was the only one I could find in my mag lol.

    What makes me follow someone?

I follow people who genuinely help me either feel good (make me laugh, uplift me) or teach me something. Anyone who provides real value without trying to sell something ticks all my boxes! I will always buy from someone I like after I know they have helped me before, through their videos or blog posts.

If I could choose one suggestion?

To talk and write things you are passionate about so that your energy shines through..

Anyway, sorry I went on a bit!! (shit I really did write an essay! Ha ha) Great idea Matt. Keep doing what you are doing :)

    Speak soon xx

    • Matt:

BLIMEY! Carly, I’m blown away! Very very impressive.

Thank you so much for taking the time to go through all your ideas on this. Any longer and you could put this out as a course!

I think you’ve stolen the lead in the little contest. I love your points about why Yaro is so popular and the things that Eben mentioned. I’ll touch on more of these points once I’ve finished the contest on the 6th, as there’s loads of great value here.

      Thanks again.

      Matt

  • Hey Matt, great idea. I agree with Cher and Fran. I personally think the more of you the better. Authenticity it essential, reveal you. I would like to see more of the Matt that I have the priviledge sharing on our calls. Your insight and wisdom on life is quite something and video blogging would give people more of a chance to see you. As Cher said, people buy from YOU for who you are, it is personal. Bit like what you said to me the other day, you learn the bits and pieces of driving a car than you are off, well maybe you have got lots of the knowledge now and it is time for the real Matt to shine like the star you are.
I appreciate you too, very much, you help me loads.
    Thank you,
    Penny

  • Hey Matt,

Great idea for a post, what makes me come back to a blog over & over again, or \"follow\" someone is…

    1) The quality of the content – If I feel that the content is unique & is giving me some immediate value, then I will come back for more. I will also retweet or FB like the post as I like to share quality content on my social media profiles. This keeps me coming back because generally people are fairly consistent, their content is either always pretty good or always pretty poor. It doesn\’t matter to me whether its video, audio or written, I just like top quality content with an immediate benefit to me or my subscribers.

I think the posts above cover pretty well how to inject personality into your content so I won\’t even try lol

    2) The quality of a lead magnet – If I see stuff that is obviously crappy PLR stuff then I switch off. If their lead magnet is their own I am much more likely to sign up to their list, as a quick scan of their free report or videos etc will give me a good idea of whether they are \"inbox worthy\" or not. Once again personality & content is key, if I think that they just made a quick report to capture an email without providing any real value, then the next few emails are just sell, sell, sell without any new value given then I won\’t stay subscribed very long.

    3) Reminders – As we all have a million things on our mind sometimes we can forget about even the best of blogs. Yaro Starak, Frank Kern, Kenneth Yu are a few good examples of top IMers who will often send an email to their list after making a new blog post. Often the blogs I visit are simply because they emailed me & convinced me to check it out! Once I\’m there I might then have a bit of a browse.

For me someone who has a big \"personality\" but doesn\’t deliver much value loses out to someone who\’s personality may not be so obvious but delivers good content. Of course in an ideal world, personality & good content combined is the real winning formula!

    • Matt:

      Hey Joey!

Thanks very much indeed for your comment. You made some great points and definitely ones that I’m going to implement. I’m certainly going to start sending my list details of the blog posts I’ve done to create a cycle of traffic. I like your idea of stuff being ‘inbox worthy’ or not. :)

Your points about the content quality are important too and that’s something I’m working on too. I want to provide amazing value for the readers here and even better value for those that subscribe to my list. Ah, I feel all inspired again now.

      Thanks buddy.

      Matt
